The Diabetic Youth Foundation is a volunteer driven
organization that is supported by donations from the community, which
includes cash donations, donated supplies (in-kind gifts), and a strong
core of volunteers (both medical and general volunteers) that donate
their time. If you would like to help the Diabetic Youth Foundation,

I
want information on how to make a financial contribution to the Diabetic
Youth Foundation.
The Diabetic Youth Foundation raises its funds from
individuals, corporations and foundations, and does not receive any
financial assistance from state or federal agencies. While some of our
programs have a fee to participate, these fees cover less than 60% of
the actual cost of participating in our programs. In addition, we have
a long history of having a very generous scholarship (campership)
program to ensure that no child or family is turned away because of
financial hardship. If you are interested in supporting the Foundation
with a financial contribution, we offer several options to support our
work. Whatever mechanism you choose, you can always count on the
Diabetic Youth Foundation to use your donation wisely. We are very
proud of the fact that 86% of all funds raised are used to support our
services and only 14% is used for administration and fundraising (2002
agency audit). For more information from our latest audit,

Workplace Campaigns, such as
the United Way, Corporate, and State Employee Campaigns, are convenient
methods of supporting the work of the Diabetic Youth Foundation. Many
employers conduct workplace fund drives to encourage their employees to
support worthy causes important in their communities. Through the
convenience of payroll deduction, donors can spread their contribution
across an entire year. Most campaigns will allow you to designate your
donation to your favorite organization, and the Foundation has
registered with some United Way campaigns, and many Corporate and State
Employee Campaigns.
However, if we are not
listed in your local United Way or other workplace campaign, please ask
your employer if you can designate your support to the Diabetic Youth
Foundation. If the Foundation needs to provide documentation or other
information to your company to participate, ask your Human Resource
department to contact the Foundation.

Francisco Bay Area United Way number is 5017
FOUNDATIONS
Every year, the Diabetic
Youth Foundation receives financial grants from foundations in support
of our educational programs and Bearskin Meadow summer residential camp
programs. These foundations have enabled DYF to enhance our services by
providing innovative programs to children and families, and to
healthcare providers who work with families affected by diabetes.
Foundations provide either unrestricted grants to support the entire
organization or grants that are restricted to a specific program or
project. For more information on how foundations support the Diabetic
Youth Foundation, call our Development Director at 925-680-4994-ext. 15.
CORPORATIONS
The Diabetic Youth
Foundation relies on contributions from individuals, foundations and
corporations to help underwrite most of the cost associated with
providing our programs and services to the diabetic community.
Corporations such as those listed below provide unrestricted educational
grants and direct contributions to offset the cost of our Bearskin
Meadow Camp program, our weekend educational programs at Camp Arroyo,
and our Kids Club and Teen Adventure programs and to produce all our
educational pamphlets and brochures.
In recognition of our
corporate sponsors, the Diabetic Youth Foundation has created a list of
our significant corporate sponsors to allow our visitors see how
companies support our mission. We encourage parents of children with
diabetes to visit these sponsors’ website to learn for themselves what
new treatments, technologies, and services are being developed or
offered. Careful evaluation, in consultation with qualified medical
professionals, is always recommended when reviewing options that affect
your care. To ensure the best objective programs to our constituents,
the Diabetic Youth Foundation’s policy is never endorses any product or
services. For information about becoming a corporate sponsor, please
contact our Development Director by calling (925) 680-4994 ext. 15.

CAR DONATION PROGRAM
The DYF has partnered up
with Donate For Charity to allow our supporters to donate cars, trucks,
and RV and have the proceeds benefit our programs and services.
DYF receives between 70% to 80% of the net proceeds from the sale.
To donate, contact Donate for Charity directly by phone at 866-392-4483
or check them out online at
www.donateforcharity.com. Remember to tell them that you want
the proceeds to benefit DYF
PLANNED GIVING
Over the years, the Diabetic
Youth Foundation has benefited from those who have made special
provisions in their Estate Plans to support the Foundation. Most Planned
Gifts to DYF come from individuals who have made a provision in their
will or other Estate Plans that designate either a fixed amount or a
percentage of their estate. However, there are numerous planned gift
options that can have profound tax implications that can benefit both
your estate and DYF. DYF strongly encourages anyone interested in
supporting DYF through a planned gift to consult with his or her
financial advisor and/or tax attorney. If you have any questions
regarding making a Planned Gift to the Diabetic Youth Foundation, please
call Paula at the DYF office at 925-680-4994.
The Mary
B. Olney Founders Circle
Anyone who has included the Diabetic Youth Foundation in
their Estate Plans can become a member of the Founders Circle by
notifying the Foundation of their intentions. Legacy Society members are
recognized for their support in our Annual Donor recognition in our
newsletters. Legacy Society members also have the reward of knowing that
they have made a long-term commitment to helping the Diabetic Youth
Foundation continue its work of supporting children and families
affected by diabetes.
Giving a gift of appreciated
securities (stock) is a great way to support the programs and services
of the Diabetic Youth Foundation. There are two significant benefits to
you, the donor, in making these kinds of gifts.
- In most instances, you are entitled to deduct
the full market value of the stock from your taxes.
- You can avoid paying capital gains taxes on the
appreciated securities.
HOW
DO YOU MAKE A GIFT OF STOCK OR APPRECIATED SECURITIES?
1. We
ask that you or your broker first contact DYF to inform us of your
intention of making a gift to DYF using stocks. We will ask you to
provide the following information:
- Your name, address, and telephone number
- The name(s) of the stock that is being donated
- The number of shares of stock being donated
2. We
will then provide you with the information on our brokerage account and
the steps you will need to take to make the transfer to our account.
3.
After we have received the stock in our account, we will provide you
with a written receipt of your donation, which you will need for tax
purposes.
4. If
you prefer to send the actual stock certificate, you will need to speak
to our broker directly after providing DYF with the above information,
since donating actual stock certificates must use a special form to
ensure that the transfer is accomplished correctly.
If you have stock that has
gone down in value, you can still support DYF. To maximize your benefit,
sell the stock and contribute the proceeds to DYF. In most cases, you
can then receive a tax deduction AND a capital loss deduction. To ensure
that you qualify for this program, please consult your financial advisor
on all tax related matters.
