DYF Takes Mount Whitney, 2012

A Life Changing Trip for Teens ages 15-17

On July 14, up to ten participants will gather at Bearskin Meadow Camp to prepare to embark on a 14, 496 foot, 90 mile journey, to the highest peak in the lower 48 states. The group will spend the first one to two days at DYF’s Bearskin Meadow Camp, and then cross the Western Sierra to the Mount Whitney Zone, at which point they will summit to 14,496 feet. The group will return to camp on July 24 to debrief the trip with departure on July 25.

2012 DYF Summer Programs At A Glance

DYF is excited to be able to offer Camp de los Niños this summer! We are looking forward to partnering with Stanford to provide the summer camp experience children and families have come to know and love at Camp Campbell. While there are sure to be some changes as we merge these two groups the learning, fun and friendship of camp will remain intact.

As our 74th year of providing services comes to a close, we are proud that our programs continue to change the lives of the children, teens and families living with diabetes and the community that supports them. While the economic environment remains a challenge to DYF, we are thankful to our many supporters that fund more than 70% of the actual cost of our programs. It is truly because of them that we are able to create programs with long term impact.

With our community’s help, we can celebrated several accomplishments this past year, including,

• The opening of Doc and Ellen’s Place, BMC’s new Health Center and Family Living Building. Now we have a great place for diabetes management, and indoor sleeping accommodations for families with small children or other special needs;
• Provided more scholarships for all BMC programs, including 63 scholarship participants in our Kids and Teen Camps;
• A new cabin to house our volunteer Pediatric Endocrinologists, which has allowed us to attract world-class doctors with families to be part of our health professional team at BMC;
• Renovated headquarters building at Bearskin Meadow Camp, which has allowed us to have effective working space for camp staff and better programs for kids, teens and families;
• Operated at capacity for all BMC programs and served almost 800 kids, teens and families through our 9 programs this summer;
• Provided services to over 700 individuals in programs outside of BMC, including two weekend Family Camps, a Teen Weekend Retreat, a Teen Ski Weekend, several one day programs, including Surf Day, Skate and Bowling nights and our collaboration with UCSF in running their Kids Kamp program during their annual diabetes symposium;
• Held a one week Day Camp program in Oakland. We had 29 children participate and it provided DYF an opportunity to serve children (and parents) whom are not ready for sleep-away camp. Next year, we will have three locations (Sacramento, Palo Alto and Oakland) and we plan on serving 120 kids;
• Provided logistical support to the Stanford Hospital Pediatric Endocrinology department helping them offer the “Camp De Los Ninos” this past summer. DYF will be working closely with the Stanford Hospital, the YMCA of the Silicon Valley, and other health providers and play a lead role in providing this program next summer;
• Presented a diabetes training program at the California School Nurses conference this past summer;
• Created a new website (www.dyf.org) that is informative and much easier to navigate.

While we are very proud of our achievement over the past year, we know our work is far from done. There are new children being diagnosed every day, and families need our services more than ever to help them navigate the complexity of living well with diabetes. Until there is no more diabetes, we at DYF will continue to work hard in creating a community of services and people that will enable those affected by diabetes to live well and thrive. So What is DYF Day?

Many have referred to it as the “Diabetic Youth Foundation Day,” some have called it the “Do-it Yourself Fundraiser Day,” and others the “Design Your Fundraiser Day.” Whatever you choose to call it, it’s about giving one day a year to support the DYF’s life changing programs and services for children, teens and their families affected by diabetes!

Over 500 participants are expected to participate from all over the San Francisco Bay, Sacramento and surrounding areas for this annual event. The fun-filled day includes an opening event program with awards and acknowledgements, family-fun activities, food, live entertainment and a community fair.

Be a part of our community’s efforts by creating a team.  These are NOT walk teams, these are DYF Day teams.  You can choose to create your own event (go you!), join the event of another family (fun and a bit easier!), or simply make a straightforward online fundraising page (you’ve got this one!).

Join us in honoring children living with the daily challenge of diabetes while also celebrating the love and support of the community who works to support our kids and families, at DYF Day 2012 at 10AM at Heather Farm Park on Sunday, April 29, 2012 in Walnut Creek.

Please join us for The Diabetic Youth Foundation’s Annual Fresno Dinner to be held on Saturday, April 21, at the University Square Hotel (formerly the Picadilly Inn) in Fresno!

This year’s event is named “Raisin” Awareness for Children with Diabetes and will feature both a live and silent auction, wine toss, dinner and entertainment! Save the date and come out and join members of the Central Valley’s healthcare, business and agriculture community and parents of children with diabetes for an evening of fun for all. Come out and see the difference that DYF’s programs make in the lives of children, teens and families affected with type-1 diabetes.

Spring Family Ed Retreat,  Camp Arroyo, Livermore, CA

Families with kids of all ages with diabetes and their siblings are welcome to our annual Spring retreat at Camp Arroyo in Livermore. In the mornings, parents will spend time in diabetes education while campers rotate through a number of organized actvities including nature, sports & games, diabetes education, arts & crafts and much more! In the afternoon families will be able to participate in a number of different activities including the popular ropes course, arts and crafts, basketball, bocce ball, and of course our annual game of Families vs. Staff kickball game. We can’t forget about our great campfire with s’mores and our annual Family Camp Party & Dance!
