Over the course of four days starting Friday, May 24 and ending Monday, May 27 we hope to have close to 100 camp parents, older campers, former campers, community volunteers, and staff come together to scrub, hammer, saw and rake in order to prepare the grounds and buildings for our 74^th summer under the stars. Most Work Weekend volunteers arrive late Friday night or early Saturday morning and leave sometime between Sunday evening and Monday afternoon.

In exchange for your hard work we will keep your tummies filled with hot meals and delicious snacks prepared by our wonderful kitchen staff, a beautiful view of the stars as you drift to sleep on our open air decks and the chance to participate in the camp season’s first campfire.

Since our founding in 1938, DYF has provided life-changing services to the diabetes community. DYF has never charged the actual cost for each participant to attend. Initially, the families were asked to pay whatever they could and the two founding Doctors (Dr. Mary Olney and Dr. Ellen Simpson) paid the rest of the costs out of their own funds or from donations from friends and local businesses. From the start, every family paid at least what it would have cost to have their child at home instead of at camp, but no family ever paid the actual cost of attending a program. In 1951, DYF was incorporated as a 501C3 not-for-profit to raise the funds and creating the infrastructure to support programs. Since that time, DYF has had a policy that ensured our programs are priced to allow access to anyone who needs our services.

To help ensure that DYF continues to have the resources to deliver life-changing services to our community, DYF will start to use a voluntary system for families to choose one of three payment options. Families will be able to choose whether they will pay for the ACTUAL COST (Tier 1), the SUBSIDIZED COST (Tier 2), or the SCHOLARSHIP COST (Tier 3), to attend a DYF program. Below is an explanation of each:

WHAT IS THE ACTUAL COST? – The actual cost to attend most of our programs is typically 3 times higher than our subsidized cost. DYF spends substantial resources having intensively trained program staff; paid and volunteer medical staff from leading medical centers; inviting facilities to hold our programs; and administrative infrastructure to support the many requirements of working with children. Finally, DYF has a small group of committed year-round staff to execute the mission of the agency. To insure DYF continues to operate effectively and transparently, DYF conducts a financial audit every year by an outside accounting firm and is accredited by the American Camp Association.

Every year, DYF uses the Audited Financial Statement to assess the actual cost of each program per participant. This is the cost that is posted as the ACTUAL COST for each program.

We encourage all those who can afford it to pay the ACTUAL COST of attending a program.

By paying the actual cost of your family participation in a program, you help DYF use our limited resources to serve more families, including those in our Scholarship program.

TIER 1: For 2013, the ACTUAL COST for all programs are as follows:

BMC KIDS CAMP $2285

BMC TEEN CAMP $2851

BMC FAMILY CAMP $1119 (per person)

LIT PROGRAM (I & II) $2684

CAMP DE LOS NIÑOS $1730

SUPER BUDDY DAY CAMPS $686

WHAT IS THE SUBSIDIZED COST? The subsidized cost is set by the board and reflects DYF’s policy of charging only a third to half of the actual cost of attending a program. A majority of our families choose this option.

Most families pay this amount and there is no requirement or condition in asking to pay the Tier 2 Subsidized Rate for the program. We do ask families to consider alternative ways they can help DYF pay for the remaining cost for them to attend a program or service. This is not mandatory, but DYF feels it is critical that all participants know the true cost of programs and services. Our goal is to help our participants recognize the commitment DYF makes in creating great programs and ask how they can be part of the solution.

TIER 2: For 2013, the SUBSIDIZED COST for all programs are as follows:

BMC KIDS CAMP $945

BMC TEEN CAMP $1,045

BMC FAMILY CAMP $1,150 (one parent and one child)

LIT PROGRAM (I & II) $950 (I) and $800 (II)

CAMP DE LOS NIÑOS $725

SUPER BUDDY DAY CAMPS $325

WHAT IS THE SCHOLARSHIP COST? - Since our inception in 1938, DYF has worked very hard to provide opportunity for all community members to attend, including those with limited income, or in difficult family situations. For those requesting to pay the Scholarship Cost, we require additional information that will be used by our Scholarship Review Committee in awarding Scholarships. We require all families to submit the latest copy of the 1040 IRS form and a written statement (Wards of the court are exempted). Minimum cost to attend any program is the registration fee, which reflects the original philosophy of our founders. Using income and number of dependents, a sliding scale is used to determine the scholarship amount awarded.

TIER 3: For 2013, the minimum SCHOLARSHIP COST for all programs is $150

Just like those paying the Subsidized Fee, we ask all Scholarship recipients to consider what else they can do to support DYF.

Annual Work Weekend – Memorial Day Weekend 2013

First and foremost, THANK YOU for your generous donation of time and hard work to help prepare camp for the over 750 children, teens and families that will have the opportunity to experience the “magic” of the Diabetic Youth Foundation’s Bearskin Meadow Camp this summer! Without your help camp would truly not be possible.

Please note that we will NOT be providing childcare at Work Weekend! While you are more than welcome to bring your children we ask that children under the age of 16 be under the direct supervision of an adult at all times. In order to keep everyone safe we ask that children under 16 accompany you and assist you in performing your tasks. If you are a brining a young child you are welcome to bring a babysitter or a child care provider to watch your child while you work! Our goal is to fully utilize our limited time to prepare camp and to maximize the number of able bodies present. The days will be long, full of hard work, and extremely rewarding.

All volunteers are encouraged to bring a pair of work gloves. If you have the desire to help us scrub and clean the kitchen and/or bathrooms you are encouraged to bring a pair of rubber gloves. Be sure to bring your warmest sleeping bag (plus a few extra blankets) and a pillow. Spring weather is variable and unpredictable. Clothing should be layered including warm clothes (especially for chilly nights and early mornings). A warm hat is strongly recommended for those chilly Bearskin evenings. There is always the possibility of snow!

We have lots of work to do so feel free to bring a friend who wants to learn more about BMC or neighbor who wants to give back to the community, just be sure to give them the heads up about the rustic nature and hard work they are in store for. But more importantly share with them the magic and support of the DYF community!

Directions to Bearskin Meadow Camp (located 65 miles east of Fresno) will be emailed to you in mid May with further instructions including weather conditions, a packing list and the like.

Please note that during Work Weekend Bearskin is as always a drug free, alcohol free and smoke free environment!

This program is designed for kids looking for an independant camp experience. Kids Camp is perfect for kids who are ready for a prgram filled with adventure and fun. New and returning campers are welcome. Campers are grouped with 8-10 other kids their own age and live on a deck with 2-3 counselors, at least one of whom has diabetes.
