The Diabetic Youth Foundation (DYF), has opened its doors to the first new building constructed at Bearskin Meadow Camp in more than 50 years. DYF is the owner and operator of Bearskin Meadow Camp (BMC), the first type-1 diabetes camp built west of the Mississippi. The camp, constructed in 1960 at an elevation of 5,800 feet, was originally designed for children and teens with diabetes. As the treatment and care of diabetes evolved, the need for space to accommodate the camp’s paid and volunteer medical staff grew. Additionally, the outdoor sleeping accommodations made the property a challenge for families with small children.

Mats Wallin, DYF Executive Director, announced, “The new buildings will provide for the ever increasing technological needs of diabetes and provide housing for medical professionals who want to work at camp and for those in need of diabetes training and education. Additionally, the new buildings will make room for our families with young children who in the past have been unable to take advantage of DYF’s life-changing Family Camp program due to the challenges of the outdoor environment.” Wallin went on to announce the names of the building; Doc’s Place, Ellen’s Place and Steve’s Place in honor the agency’s founders and current medical staff.
