In
1938, Dr. Mary Olney, a physician from UC San Francisco, took 19
children to camp to teach them how to be better managers of their
condition. She was joined a few years later by Dr. Ellen Simpson.
Since that summer, the Diabetic Youth Foundation has been providing
support and education for those affected by diabetes. |

We
now serve over 1200 children and families through our programs and
services, including our very popular Bearskin Meadow Camp. Our
programs use the results of the Diabetes Control and Complications
Trial, which show that tight blood sugar control can delay and
even prevent the life-threatening complications associated with
diabetes |

Our educational
programs, guided by DYFs Medical Director, Dr. Mary Simon, are
a collaborative effort between physicians, diabetes educators, nurses,
dietitians, and parents, who use the latest information regarding effective
management of blood sugars to empower children and families to reduce
and eliminate the complications associated with diabetes.
The
Diabetic Youth Foundations policy is that no child or family shall
be denied the opportunity to attend our programs due to inability to pay.
In order to continue this policy, we look to the community, including
organizations, individuals, foundations, and corporations to help support
our scholarship and educational programs. All contributions are fully tax
deductible, and more importantly, provide the needed financial support
to allow ALL children and families to have the positive and supportive
program experience that will give them the tools for lifelong management
of their diabetes.
